I couldn’t not comment on the picture of the straw house with the staircase made of hay and the rocket stove right next to it. It looks so pretty. I also see a fire extiguisher in the frame. I hope they have a smoke detector upstairs and a quick way out of the second story. If those stairs were ever to catch fire the entire building looks like it could be engulfed in about four minutes.
Great looking building, but rocket stoves and straw houses may not be a good mix, just a thought.
Hi Mike: It’s a misconception that straw bale homes are more prone to fire than conventional houses — the opposite is actually true. They have a much greater fire resistance than a typical stick frame house. The chance of this particular stair case ever catching fire is so low, too — it’s made of cob, which is even more fire resistant than straw bale. It’s like trying to get concrete to light up.
