Time is (of course) flying. You’ve heard it all before, and it’s true all the same. August, though it doesn’t feel like any August I can remember, has peaked and we’re on the slide down to September, one of my favorite months. Though when I was of school age, I absolutely dreaded the coming of that particular month, and could not much look past the beginning of the school year to the sheer beauty and joy of the end of summer and beginning of fall.
We’re starting off September with our Cob Building Workshop, and things are definitely in motion to get ready for the event. We’ll be playing with cob in the forest for three days, here at the lovely mountain homestead of Tim and Jane outside Berea, Kentucky. It’s an absolutely beautiful site, as you might be able to tell from the photo above.
That little structure you see above is the shelter for the cob bench we’ll be building. It’s going to be a fun little project. Really, any opportunity to get to play with mud is a good one, and this particular bench is nicely situated in the woods, overlooking a small pond and the future home of Tim and Jane. It’s nice and shaded and quiet, and should be a great place to sit back and soak it all in.
I suspect participants are in for a good time. If the past few weeks are any indicator, the weather should be just fine. Speaking of weather… it’s been wet enough recently to bring on a goodly number of wild mushrooms, including this perfect Chicken of the Woods. What a beauty! It popped up a mere 50 yards or so from the cob bench site. I love the sheer variety and abundance of wild mushrooms around here. Mm…
Until next time…
Looking forward to taking your class. Love your site, cob house and Rocket Mass Heater info! I’m not sure my reservations for two people have gone through okay. Waiting for more info.

I have a question… How waterproof are earthen floors? Would I need tile in a bathroom? I have water loving children and I wouldn’t want to ruin a floor:-) Thanks///Ellen
