The end of winter is nigh. However, it can be hard to tell sometimes. 78 degree days in February, night-time lows in the teens this weekend — the weather is an increasingly less reliable marker during this time of year. I’m sure that’s true for many of us, wherever we live. Nevertheless, there’s a change in the air. I’m jonesing to get my spring cleaning going this month. There’s a lot to catch up on after a busy 2022 building season. Here’s where we stand with the timber frame pavilion build.

Timber Frame Pavilion Update

Progress has been slow on the timber frame pavilion, but there’s been on-going work throughout the winter. After months of working with heavy oak timbers, it’s been a nice change of pace to work with this sassafras lumber for the roof deck.

I’ve used sassafras only a couple of times in the past. Last year, I found a reliable source and decided it was a good choice for this application, especially given the high quality to low cost ratio. It’s beautiful, smells lovely, and very lightweight. Supposedly, it’s rather rot-resistant so I’m hoping to use it on the engawa/wrap-around porch floor, too. We shall see.

Anyway, it looks quite nice in contrast to the charred fir rafters. I’m dying to wrap this decking up right now, but this is a phase of work that definitely requires another pair of hands or two.

Workshops Around The Corner

It’s hard to believe, but our first workshop is two months away! We’ll be kicking off the 2023 season with our Natural Building Essentials Workshop. We still have a few spaces remaining, so make sure you register soon to snatch up a spot. There’s lots of new building progress on the land and around the community to explore while you’re here. Our natural building tour day is a great chance to see a variety of projects in the local area.

We’re happy to have more interest in this class from families. If you want to join with your children, please reply for more information. Families and kids add a whole new dimension to the class. Such a great memory for everyone involved.

The Japanese Caprentry Workshop has been full for a while, but we’re still accepting names for our wait list. If all goes well, we’ll continue with the class next year too, so we’ll automatically add your name to our interest list for future workshops.

That’s a wrap for now. Til next time!
