If you’ve been inspired by natural building and need a jump start, this is the course for you. We’ll give you the solid foundation you need to take your dreams further. Join us for our 5 day introductory Natural Building Essentials Workshop. In this course, you’ll get hands-on experience building light clay straw walls, mixing and applying natural plasters, and stomping and sculpting cob. We’ll tour beautiful natural homes in the local community and have a cob oven pizza party, too. Think of it like natural building summer camp! Families with children are welcome.
NEW for 2027: This year, students will work on our one-of-a-kind Japanese guesthouse project. The timber frame was raised in June of 2026 in our Japanese Carpentry Workshop, and we’ll continue with wall enclosure and plaster work this year. Come and learn about our experience blending traditional Japanese building methods with more modern North American natural building techniques. This is an incredibly unique opportunity.

Workshop Location
The Natural Building Essentials Workshop is located 15 minutes outside of Berea, Kentucky (map) at our land, South Slope Farm. We live in the gorgeous Clear Creek Valley on 30 acres of hillside pasture and woods. Our farm sits in the middle of a rural community with many folks dedicated to art, music, community building, permaculture, and activism. We are pleased to be surrounded many motivated friends and neighbors who want to live creative, heartfelt lives.
Berea is a small town in central Kentucky with an active population of craftspeople, artists, woodworkers, musicians, social activists, and homesteaders. The town has a longstanding tradition of diversity, social justice, environmental responsibility, and community service. The historic Berea College is the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, and its influence on the town remains to this day.
